A proud moment in indeed for Tanzania, the world-renowned event, TEDx was hosted for the time first in the city of Dar es Salaam in early September this year. The one-day program brought together a selection of nine inspirational speakers, 100 participants and a dedicated team of volunteers, making this event a reality and building an interactive social platform that truly defines a TED event as ‘Ideas Worth Spreading.’
The independently self-organized event held in Dar es Salaam promoted as TEDxIlala ignited ideas themed as ‘Yes, In My Lifetime’. Enthusiastic participants from various professions came together to witness groundbreaking stories inspired from Tanzania’s reality from individuals who have made a remarkable footprint in their receptive fields.
TEDxIlala was an event that gave all attendees an opportunity to express their thoughts through one on one interaction and a creative display area to write their goals in this lifetime, what would they like to do before they die, books to read and direct questions poised to speakers. The full day event gave incredible opportunities for participants, speakers and volunteers , many of who met each other for the first time, to interact, learn, discuss and express themselves.
The highlight of the TEDXIlala was the TED talk of the nine inspiring speakers. Each narrated their individual stories connected to their areas of expertise and its relation to today’s reality in Tanzania. In 18 minutes, each speaker took participants to a journey into a world less known; the unknown reality of refugees (Janemary Ruhundwa) , children and their perception of education (Doreen Kessy), mobile technology in the African continent (Tulanana Bohela), volunteering for innovation in water filtration (Dr.Askwar Hilonga), global solutions from insect protein (Kigen Compyon), urban planning in Dar es Salaam (Anders Ese) , the importance of community journalism (Sammy Awami and Daniel Hayduk) and bringing classical music to Tanzania (Hekima Raymond).
The event was a mind opener with ideas and stories that flowed person to person, touching participants to realize and ponder upon action they would like to take ‘In this lifetime.’ The event has been largely possible and a major success, with great efforts of the organizing team who designed and executed in the best interest of the community and social interest of participants.
TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages.
A TEDx event is a local gathering where live TED-like talks and videos previously recorded at TED conferences are shared with the community. TEDx events are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis. The content and design of each TEDx event is unique and developed independently, but all of them have features in common.
